Due to the large population and economic growth in Hong Kong, the building of a tram-way was sanctioned in 1881. In 1903 the construction of a single-track system began which ran from Kennedy Town to Causeway Bay. The route was later extended to Shau Kei Wan. In 1928, new tram-cars with a fully enclosed 'First Class' upper deck were introduced. Approximately 200,000 people use the tram system in Hong Kong each day, which is very small when compared with the 5.2 million who use the MTR. However, the tram is a very romantic and paced way to see the sights and hear the sounds of the city.
